Thoreau is one of the many Pixl’s that joins your party in Super Paper Mario. He is the second Pixl you have join you and the first Pixl that can affect enemies. (Tippi can’t affect enemies she can only tell you about them).

Anyway Thoreau’s special ability is to enable you (Mario, Luigi, Peach or Bowser) to throw him at objects. To do this simply equip him and press ‘1’ on the wii remote to throw him. This can come in useful in different situations and can even be so important that without him you could not carry on with the mission.

Thoreau funnily enough looks like a hand. (Funny because you use a hand to throw stuff) His body is the palm and the five circles above being the fingers.

So how can throwing Thoreau help you? Well when there are ‘!’ switches around the area you need to jump or hit them in some way. Sometimes you can’t reach them yourself which is where Thoreau comes in handy. Simply jump and throw him to activate the switch. That’s not all though as he also has many other uses.

One of the best offensive and defensive uses would be picking up enemies. By throwing him at enemies he will then bring the enemy to you, which in turn makes you pick the enemy up and hold him above your shoulders. You can then (by pressing ‘1’ again) throw the enemy at either the floor or another enemy even! If you throw the enemy on the floor you will render it dizzy for a moment which gives you a chance to kill it by jumping on its head. While if you throw the enemy at another enemy then there is a high chance you will kill both enemies.

Also you can use him for one-off unique situations such as receiving a key to open a locked door when you can reach it etc. Thoreau’s card can be found in the pit of 100 trials (Flipside), on the 20th floor. It is number 229 and classed as rare.

I think that Thoreau is very handy as a Pixl and would give a rating of 7.9

WARNING: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS BIG SPOILERS ABOUT THE ENDING OF THE GAME ‘SUPER PAPER MARIO’.

Or as she is known in her human form Timpani. Yep that’s right she used to be human. She was going to marry Lord Blumiere (Count Bleck). However his father didn’t fancy the idea (for whatever reason) and sent her to a different dimension. Merlon (the wizard) found her, and his only option to save her life was to turn her into a Pixl. So he did. She doesn’t remember much of her past, that is until from the middle of the super paper mario game where she starts recalling things.

For anyone who is thinking who is Tippi and plays super paper mario, she is the Pixl that is shaped like a butterfly and is multicoloured. So she is also the first Pixl you meet in the game, right at the beginning. She also in my opinion the most helpful Pixl considering she knows just about everything! At the end of the game when the void is just about to destroy the world she marries Count Bleck which in turn destroys the void and the chaos heart with it. However unfortunately Count Bleck and Tippi also disappear inside it. But not all is lost as at the end of the game there is an image showing what appears to be Count Bleck and ….. a lady with him. (Most people suspect that this is Tippi (Timpani) and that both people are living happily together somewhere distant).

Anyway as I was saying earlier I think that Tippi is the most helpful Pixl in the game. That is because when ever you change you wii remote from horizontal position to vertical and point at the screen she will tell you everything you need to know. For example if you point at a Koopa (enemy) she will tell a little bit of basic information, followed by the max attack, max defence and the life of the Koopa. Then she will tell some useful information such as ‘Jump on it to kill it’ lovely! However this is not always the case. For example when she is kidnapped by Francis you can’t use her help because she’s … well …. kidnapped. So how would she be able to help you?

Getting her to read descriptions of enemies is not the only thing she can do however. Many times in the game you will walk into a room with a dead end. You’ll think “Oh, I just flip into 3D and the door will appear” however when you do this there won’t be. Then I bet a number of you will go on your computer and type in google “super paper mario missing door” or something like that. Well there is a easy way to find the “hidden” door. Use Tippi, simple. Just point your wii remote on your TV screen and you will be able to see any hidden objects. Then to make them visible just press ‘A’ while it is highlighted. This is a very useful tool and you can even find things such as hidden chests etc.

You can find Tippi’s catch card in the pit of 100 trials (Flipside) on the 10th floor. It is number 228 and is classed as rare.

I would give Tippi a rating of 9.4 for helpfulness.

Toad really stands out. With his blue Jacket (???), white shorts, brown shoes and his massive mushroom hat which is almost the size of him! He is always smiling and is never angry but instead usually sulks. He is Princess Peaches attendant and protector of the mushroom kingdom.

His first appearance was on the Nintendo Entertainment System on a game called Super Mario Bros. (1985) However his debut game where you could actually play as him was on 28th April 1989 (Europe) on the Nintendo Entertainment System. He was one of the four playable characters, the others being Mario, Luigi & Princess Peach. He was also had the highest speed and power ratings of the 4.

From then on Toad has featured in many games in the Mario series including Mario Tennis, and has featured in many of the Mario Party series since Mario Party 4.

He has been known since ‘Wario Woods’ to be one of Wario’s enemies and he is also a enemy of Bowser’s, but has been known to cower in fear of Bowser’s size and appearance. Since the game Mario Kart: Double Dash Toadette has been introduced as Toads partner, and in many games such as Mario Party 8 they are the only two people from the ‘Toad’ species.

In many games Toad has been like the tutorial master, in which he guides the player through the basics of the game. However lately this job has been taken over by Toadsworth. Since the very beginning Toad has always been faithful to Princess Peach and normally is always with her if both characters are in a game together.

Toads latest instalment was on <st1:date year="2007" day="23" month="11">the 23rd November 2007</st1:date> (Europe) when he was one of eight playable characters in Mario Party: DS on the Nintendo DS. It has been announced that Toad is a playable character in Mario Kart: Wii and that, although he is not a playable character, he will make a appearance in Super Smash Bros Brawl in 2008.

Toad is a funny friendly character and I would give him a rating of 8.2

IF YOU ARE PLAYING SUPER PAPER MARIO AND HAVE NOT GOT TO THE LAST MISSION PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS. SOME TEXT MAY CONTAIN A TINY SPOILER.

I bet I can guarantee that most of you reading this review are thinking “Who the hell is count bleck?” well I wouldn’t be surprised. Count Bleck has actually appeared in only one game, so you are probably in the 95% of the population who has never heard his name before.

His debut game (and his only game as a matter of fact) is none other than Super Paper Mario, that’s right any Super Paper Mario fans who have just had a light bulb go off in their head and suddenly remembered who he is “shame on you”. He is the mean person you have to fight at the end of the game. Oops did I just give something away?

Anyway he is main villain in this game and often has a habit of talking in third person especially about himself.

For you people who play Super Paper Mario, Count Bleck has 150 HP (Wow!) and a rather large attack of 8. However although at the beginning of the fight it is impossible to touch him towards the end it is and lucky for you he has a defensive point of 0.

As you know (or you don’t) in Super Paper Mario you collect everyone’s cards. Well Count Bleck‘s is Rare and is number 188. The card description says “This top-hatted villain is bent on ending the world! Fun fact: he was once known as Lord Blumiere.”

That’s right he was once known as Lord Blumiere. Have you ever wondered why Tippi always keeps saying the word ‘Blumiere’ all the time? It is because (AND THIS IS A SPOILER) he was once going to marry her.

She used to be called ‘Timpani’ and was a human. She was going to marry Lord Blumiere but his father didn’t approve and abdicated Timpani and sent her away. Merlon (from Flipside) found Timpani and transformed her into the Pixl Tippi (which he had to do to save her life)

Blumiere was so angry with his father he stole from him the Dark Prognosticus, which he used to gain dark powers. He then built his fortress and ever since has been trying to destroy the world. He used the chaos heart to open up a void, which happens to keep growing larger in the game, which will destroy every living thing.

Count Bleck is evil and I would give him a rating of 9.2 for evilness!

Not as famous as Mario but again most people would have heard of him. Wearing blue overalls just like Mario, but this time with a green shirt and cap (instead of Mario’s red ones). He also has an L on his cap, the first letter of his name, and has a larger moustache than Mario, apart from that however the two are exactly the same. With the white gloves and brown shoes etc.

Just like Mario, Luigi was created by Shigeru Miyamoto. So practically he is the man behind the Mario Bros. and thanks to him the creation of them. Luigi has had two actors voicing over him since his existence. Those being:

Mark Graue (1994)

Charles Martinet (1996-present)

If you have read my review on Mario then you would have noticed that these two actors also have voiced Mario as well. Chris Martinet is the current voice of Luigi, Mario and many other Nintendo characters.

Luigi’s first video game (debut) was in the arcade version of Mario Bros. (1983), two years after Mario’s debut in 1981. However technically this game was also Mario’s debut as in the game before that he had been referred to as Jumpman.

However Luigi has appeared in 2 games without his brother Mario where he has indeed been the star role. The two being “Mario is Missing!” which was published in 1992. The other more well known and popular one is “Luigi’s Mansion” which came out on the Nintendo Gamecube on <st1:date year="2002" day="3" month="5">3rd May 2002</st1:date>. The storyline being that Luigi has gone into a haunted mansion looking for his brother Mario (who has gone missing) and you controlling Luigi have to find Mario and win the game.

Luigi like Mario has also featured in television shows such as Super Mario Bros. where he and Mario must save the kingdom from Bowser. Luigi also appears to have a rivalry with Waluigi.

Luigi appears to have different abilities to Mario. In Super Paper Mario for example he has the highest jump. In most games now he has a higher jump and he appears to be a lot more agile than other characters.

In 2008 we can look forward to many more games Luigi will feature in such as Mario Kart Wii and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I think you could class Luigi as Nintendo’s Mascot Number 2 and is probably one of thee best known (not as much as Mario) video game characters of the time.

I would give Luigi a rating of 9.5/10!

But when did he first appear and who created him? That is what we are going to find out in this review!

Mario was created by Shigeru Miyamoto who has also created the likes of Donkey Kong, Star Fox and the Legend of Zelda. Although we all know him as mario he actually used to be called something different.

He first appeared in the first arcade game of ‘Donkey Kong’ (1981). He was called ‘Jumpman’ the reason I would imagine would be because of him having to jump up levels to reach Donkey Kong. The first game that mario has appeared in with the name mario is arcade version of Mario Bros. (1983), this game is also Luigi’s (Mario’s brother) game debut. However many people forget this game altogether and a lot of people think that Mario’s first game debut as Mario is actually the game Super Mario Bros. on the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) which was actually a whole 2 years later.

Mario has taken the world by storm since then and is officially Nintendo’s mascot. (Just like Sonic is to Sega). Up until 1997 all of Mario’s games had been in 2D with the likes of Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Land. However now a new game out on a new console stepped in to revolutionise the way people played Mario.

That console was the Nintendo 64 and that game was Super Mario 64. So Mario debuted in his first 3D game on <st1:date year="1997" day="1" month="3">1st March 1997</st1:date> (Europe). It is claimed by many fans to be the one of the greatest video games of all times.

Mario has had total of 3 actors voiced by him in video games. (English) to date they are:

Ronald B. Ruben (1991-1997)

Mark Graue (1994)

Charles Martinet (1995-present)

Mario has not just made fame in video games however and has a load of television programmes and appearances. One of the most famous being Super Mario Bros. Which features Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad, Bowser and many other numerous individuals. The storyline being that Bowser is trying to take over the world (again) and the only people that can stop him are Mario and Luigi.

Mario has been in loads (and I mean loads) of video games to date. Roughly around 50, which has to be a achievement of some kind. The Mario Series is one of the best earning series in the business and has featured loads of games such as: Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy.

In 2008 more Mario games are heading are way such as Super Smash Bros Brawl and Mario Kart Wii which is basically a improvement on one of the best games made on the Nintendo 64, “Mario Kart 64”.

In conclusion Mario is one of thee most known video game characters all over the world and will certainly be for many years to come.

It’s very hard to rate a character but I would have to give Mario a 10/10!
