Nacht der Untoten

I have decided to include this game as in both the “In-Depth” reviews and the “Walkthroughs” because really it is both. I will be describing about this mini-game in Call of Duty 5: World at War as well as giving you a few hints that will help you increase your farthest point in the game. This game is featured on the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and the PC versions of the game only. The game is called “Nacht der Untoten” which means in German “Night of the Undead”. Anyway as I have already said this is a mini-game which is supposedly never ending consists of … well Nazi Zombies.

To unlock the zombie game mode you must first complete story mode. Now it doesn’t matter whether you finish the fifteen story levels on recruit, or veteran or any difficulty setting just as long as you finish it. After the cut scene it will automatically start the Nazi zombie mode so if you don’t want to play it single player (which isn’t advisable) then quit.

Obviously the more people playing the more easier the game will be – in a matter of speaking. You are abandoned in a house with up to 3 other people with you, zombies will try to get into the house and kill you. Although zombies have no weapon 3 hits from them will kill you straight away (unless you are playing more than one player in which case you can be revived). Now from this point on I am going to tell you I nice walkthrough if your stuck.

You start in a room with 5 windows, one door which says “Hell” or “Help” on it and one stair case with the words “You must rise above the darkness” written on the wall. This room will also feature two guns one is a Karabiner 98k which you can buy for 200 points. Please do not buy this gun, as it is rubbish against the zombies. There is also a M1A1 Carbine for 600 points but alas you can’t buy it yet. If you’re wondering where these guns are you should find their drawings on the wall where you can buy them. You yourself start with a pathetic M1911 Colt which is okay at the beginning but as the zombies get faster it becomes near useless.

The best strategy to start off with is to let the zombies come to you. Let them rip a couple of planks of the window and then either knife them or get a high 100 point headshot. The latter gets you more points; you can then repair the windows which also gets you more points. When you have enough to buy the M1A1 Carbine buy it, it’s not brilliant but it’s the best you have. Keep doing this until you get to about level 4 or 5.

You should by then have got at least 1900 points and even 2500 or above. You have two options go upstairs or go into the help room. Do not go upstairs unless you want to die and lose, so instead go into the help room. Inside this room you can find two windows, one staircase (leading to the big room upstairs), one door (leading to the main room which you started in) and a cave. Now you cannot actually see the cave because of this many people forget it’s there and die, it is opposite the right window and zombies can burst out there at quite an alarming rate. The weapons available are the Thompson which is a must buy at 1500 points; buy it as soon as you have the money. Also there is a double-barrelled shotgun, which is a must not buy unless you want to be killed whilst reloading. Also in the corner of the room is a mystery box. This costs 950 points.

The mystery box can be a lifesaver or an instant failure resulting in your death. You see there are around 20 different weapons inside the mystery box, although most of the weapons are brilliant some of them are rubbish. I would recommend buying the mystery box as soon as you can. What will happen is it will take 5 seconds for the weapon to appear, you should be able to see whether it is good or not. If you do not want to buy it then it will disappear in 15 seconds.

One gun you can get from the box is the ray gun, in my opinion this is the best weapon in the game. It is an instant kill unless shooting at the legs in which case they could start crawling. Some more brilliant guns are any of the mounted ones are the deployable ones and the browning light machine gun a couple of hits and the zombies are dead. Once you have these good weapons do not use them unless overwhelmed. Stick to the Thompson (unless you have two good weapons) as you want to conserve your best ammo for the last stand later on.

The bold weapons in the box can consist of sniper rifles and pistols which you really do not want to get; if you do it could mean game over. Another weapon which is hugely overrated is the flame thrower. It works wonders on big groups of people when instant kill is enabled but that’s it. It takes 3 seconds for the zombie to realise he is burning and collapse. This means in the later levels that you will use the flame thrower and then while on fire the zombies will kill you, not very effective.

Anyway after you unlock the door you should have one person stay in there guarding the windows etc whilst the other one goes round the main room checking windows. This can be very effective especially if you have a good weapon. At the end of each level/day go back to the mystery box to get a better weapon, even if you have the best weapon available (the ray gun) go back to see if you can get a second one so you have two ray guns!

When you get to around level 9 it’s time to make your last stand! (If you are playing single player do this much earlier) Make sure you have good weapons with a lot of ammo otherwise you are going to die pretty quickly. Unlock the staircase in the help room and run for your life! When reaching the top run forward into a small room which has the stairs from the other main room. Do not open them, instead go to the right hand corner and wait. There are now only two ways a zombie can get you. One is the window on the right hand side; make sure you keep an eye out on it. The other is the door way you came through. It is very effective because they will all come in a straight line so they are easy to kill.

The only problem is when you run out of ammo! In between rounds you could run down to the mystery box but the better option is to buy the BAR which is a good weapon (it’s not brilliant but it’s effective).

One thing to remember is that there are 4 pickups in the game. These can be done when you kill a zombie in a certain way. The first looks like an “x2” sign. This will get you double points which can be really helpful. The second one looks like an ammo box and this one gives you full ammo. The third looks like a skull and gives you instant kills. The last and best looks like an atomic bomb and kills all zombies in the house at that time!

Hopefully doing this strategy you can get quite far through the levels, at the time of writing this I have got to level 16.

the flamethrower gets better as the game progresses, so in the farther levels, burning/running can be pretty effective
