Tomb Raider: Anniversary Instruction Manual Advanced Controls - PS2
Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 by Nick Maunders
I’m going to be re-writing the ‘Tomb Raider: Anniversary’ instruction manual in a more user friendly way. This can be also useful for any one who has bought the game second hand and does not have the instruction manual.
This is the PS2 version and here is my manual:
This is for advanced controls in the game
Introduction
Well as you know I have already done the basics for the tomb raider game so now it’s time to do all the advanced controls. I decided to do it in a new post because quite frankly there is a lot to cover and the previous post is already massive.
Main
Okay so now I’m going to say all of the main advanced controls in the game. In my opinion this includes climbing, grabbing, shimmying and jumping.
Well lucky for you you can get lara to jump and climb pretty much anyway in any area, however there are a lot of difficult situations where you need to have precision in making the perfect jump or grab. In most situations you will need to jump and then grab onto a ledge. To do this press
to jump and then hold R2 to grab the ledge/rope etc. You will sometimes find that lara only grabs it with one one hand, in this case you need to quickly press
to regain control.
If you feel you need to drop off the ledge for whatever reason press
to do so. To shimmy (move) along the edge move the left analog stick in the direction you want to move. To move in that direction faster keep repeatedly pressing
. If you need to pull up on a ledge then press
and move the left analog stick up. There will also be some cases where you need to jump up the ledge, or jump behind the ledge or even jump to another ledge. To do this press
and move the left analog stick in the direction you need to jump.
Grappling/Wall Running
In this section I am going to tell you how you can use your grappling hook in different ways including enabling you to wall run.
The grapple hook is a default object so you will always have it. There are certain times when you need to use the grappling hook. If for example a pit is to far to jump etc. You can only use you grapple on certain objects though. Shiny ones! So the most common type you will find is a shiny ring above you. Now you need to have really good timing to do this. Run towards the ring and just before you reach the edge jump by pressing
then quickly press
to get out your grapple. Hopefully it will attach itself to the ring and you can swing across. You can change the height you are on the grapple by holding down
and moving the left analog stick in the direction you want to go in. You can also change the direction you are moving in by again using the left analog stick.
You will also be able to pull out objects which have a shiny object on. To do this press
to attach the grapple and then press
to pull the object out. To wall run basically attach the grapple as I said in the last paragraph and go towards a wall and literally run across it!

Pole
Poles play a big part in the available exploration in tomb raider. You can swing on poles to get past pits etc. To swing on a pole simply run towards it and jump using
. Then you can use the left analog stick to do many things. First you can control where lara is on the pole, wait for her to stop swinging and then move the analog stick left to move left and right to move right. You can also change the direction of the swing by moving the left analog stick up to go forward and down to go backwards. When you want to jump from the pole to whatever is next press
, to release from the pole press
.
Columns
Columns are another aspect in the game. Just like poles except vertical and a lot bigger. You can climb up columns or you can even jump on top of them. Just like poles to jump on a column press
, now if you aren’t at the top of the pole then you can climb it by moving the left analog stick up or down if you are at the top then you can press
to jump off it. If you stay at the top for too long you will lose balance so you will need to press
to re-stabilize yourself. To release from a column just like from a pole press
.
Ropes
Just like the grapple hook the controls are exactly the same. So go up to where I have written the controls for the grapple and see there!

Ladders
There are many ladders around the game which you must use to reach your destination. Use the left analog stick to move up and the ladder, use
to jump onto/off of the ladder. You can also speed up be repeatedly pressing
, and as usual to release from the ladder press
.
Moves
There are 3 moves I’m going to be talking about in this section: Swan Diving, Knockdown Recovery and tumbling.
The first move, the swan dive, is completely for show so apart from looking good it has no value in the game. To do a swan dove jump of a area with
and then quickly (I mean really quickly) press
.
Next is knockdown recovery. This move can be done when an enemy has hit into lara and she falls to the ground. Hopefully you will not need to use this move because you won’t let an enemy get near you. But anyway, when the enemy has just hit you press
to flip instead of hitting the floor.
Tumbling is also a show move. You can do a variety of somersaults and acrobatics by pressing a mixture of the
and
buttons. So to somersault you press
and to flip you press
.
Adrenaline Dodges
Some enemies can become enraged when you shoot them (naturally) so they will charge you. You can see when this happens because you should see a burst of light around the enemy and then it will charge at you. Get ready! As it nears you the screen will blur and go into slow-motion just before it will attack you quickly press
and move the left analog stick either left, right, up or down. Then you should see a target reticle appear on the enemies face. When it turns red press L1 to shoot and if done correctly you will kill the enemy in one shot!

Breaking Free
Some enemies have the tendency to bite lara and keep a hold of her. You must break free from the grip or you could die. To break free move the left and right analog stick up and done in quick succession to break the hold.
I hope that this instruction manual has helped you and if there is anything I’ve missed all something you don’t understand simply add a comment or go into the about me section and email me.
